Excerpt:

“There’s a book I need you to collect for me.”
Natalie’s interest piqued. He was speaking her language. Plus, if he wanted them looking for a
book, chances were it was rare, old, or both. He wasn’t simply speaking her language—he was
speaking it fluently.
“What is it?” Natalie leaned in.
“A handwritten and illustrated copy of Lewis Carroll’s first attempt at Alice in Wonderland, which
he titled Alice’s Adventures Under Ground.” The thought of a handwritten manuscript by Lewis
Carroll vaulted Natalie out of her seat, but before she could speak, Brooke jumped in.
“That doesn’t make sense. Carroll gave that first edition to Alice Liddell, the little girl everyone
believes inspired the story. That copy is now on display at the British Museum.”
Brooke owned a pawn shop and immersed herself in antiques. In fact, she’d once been an
antique runner, acquiring pieces for wealthy collectors. Her knowledge and background often
overlapped with Natalie’s, but no one knew history and literature quite like Natalie. This instance
was case in point.
She looked across the room as she addressed everyone. “True, Carroll did give a copy to Alice,
but it’s been rumored for years that he wrote an even earlier version that’s been lost since
before Liddell’s copy was given to her.”
A line formed between Brooke’s perfectly manicured eyebrows. “I’ve never heard that theory.”
“It’s not well known, and many believe it to be myth. I can send you a link to the few articles I’ve
read.” Natalie had no trouble recounting the periodicals’ names, article titles, or publication
dates. Her memory simply worked that way. If she engaged with something once, she didn’t
forget it.
Brooke nodded, seemingly content with that answer for now. Natalie wasn’t offended by the
need to prove her statement. Over the past few months, she’d come to know Brooke and her
desire for concrete answers. Natalie couldn’t say she blamed her. Right about now she’d love
some solid solutions to her marriage.
“Natalie’s correct,” Caspar said. “This is a rumored copy, yet it is very much real, and I have a
lead on its location.”

Research Needed for the Book

My first published work was a flash fiction piece titled Bona Fide Beauty, about three stepsisters. It’s a twisted fairytale where two fairy sisters cast a spell on their ugly troll stepsister, turning her beautiful against her will. That unleashed an idea in my mind for a middle-grade twisted fairytale book. The Band of Unlikely Heroes series was born. This series features four unlikely heroes who battle an evil Erlking who is bent on taking over their kingdom for his own nefarious purposes.

In this series, I wanted to find an actual fairy tale no one had used before. I came across an old Norwegian tale, a type of Cinderella story, titled Katie Woodencloak where a girl runs away from her evil stepmother. This is itself a twisted tale where a bull helps a girl secure the heart of a prince. In the story, I found a nugget of an idea that I used for the first book in this series: the woodencloak.

Unlike in Katie Woodencloak, the actual woodencloak becomes an integral part of my series. In Woodencloak, my first heroine, a troll princess, has her castle overtaken by mesmerized fairies. She has to flee with her instructor’s seedling, which when planted in the magical Weald forest, will grow into the next great druid who can keep the balance of good and evil in their world, the Wilden Lands. She is gifted a woodencloak to help disguise her so she can get to the Weald in time to plant the seed. When wearing it, she looks like a tree or boulder to whoever looks upon it.  

My villain had to be something unique, so I studied evil characters and chose the Pied Piper because it’s rarely used, except possibly in Shrek. Here, I twisted him to fit what I needed in a villain. In my series, an evil elf calling himself the Erlking uses charmed pan flutes to mesmerize creatures to do his bidding. He also steals children and releases curses upon the land as all evil villains are want to do.

Because I’m a fan of The Lord of the Rings and Guardians of the Galaxy, and I love trees, I’ve always wanted to create a tree creature that would help save a kingdom. My woodgoblin druid, created from the seed my troll princess takes to the Weald, comes into play. He stars in the second book of this four-book series, Mossycoat. He’s brilliant, but has been unrooted so fast he doesn’t have any emotional or social maturity. Those he will have to grow along the way.

In the third book, Tatterhood, we revisit the fairy princess who took over our first heroine’s castle. She’s disgraced and disfigured now thanks to the Erlking hexing her, and is bent on getting her beauty back. She’ll do anything it takes to bargain with the Erlking, no matter what, and it makes for a thrilling ride. In the story, the fairy princess learns what is really important in life.

The last book, slated to come out in November of 2025, follows our last unlikely hero, a giantess girl turned beast in Woodencloak. (Title yet to be revealed) I’ve always loved Beauty and the Beast, and so in this book, the Erlking’s magic changes a bookish giant girl into a beastly creature. Afraid of her own shadow, my giantess will have to embrace her ferocious nature to help the other three rescue the stolen children, including her own bug-loving sister, and unravel the secrets of the Erlking’s music magic to stop him from taking over the Wilden Lands.

The six-year-old’s white top, knee-length khaki shorts, and specially-designed blue and white
athletic shoes, fit her small frame perfectly. As I observed her, I couldn’t stop thinking that she
was much too young to be so independent. Already accustomed to her daily schedule filled with
physical and academic requirements, L2 was still too short to sit on the bench and have her
feet  touch the ground. 

A natural-born music aficionado, L2 always seemed to have a private music channel continually
playing in her mind. As I watched, L2’s tiny fingers started drumming a beat on the table, and
she began singing her favorite song, “Little Liza Jane.”

Seria gave a breathless laugh. “If I didn’t know any better, I would think you could read my

mind. You keep saying what I’m thinking.”

            He raised his head and stared at her. Her exhaustion and swirling emotions pulled at him.

For the first time, he sympathized with her. He knew what it was like to lose everything. “How

do you know I can’t?”

            She laughed. “A few lucky guesses, and now you’re a mind reader.”

            A small, crooked smirk stretched across his face. “I’ve had a lot of lucky guesses.”

“Is that so?”

            Resting his knuckles on his thighs, he looked her straight on. “You don’t believe me?”

            She scoffed. “That you can read my mind? Nay, but I’ll give you a chance to prove it.”

She put her hands on her hips and tilted her head, her thoughts playing out clearly to him.

            “You think I’m stringing you along, but you’re humoring me because I’m doing your

laundry for you.”

            Seria’s jaw unhinged.

            He couldn’t stop his grin. “And I do have lovely eyes.” He gave her a wink and went

back to his work.
